The Cantaloupe Crop

At the end of July, beginning of August, we picked and enjoyed our cantaloupe crop.

This was the day I picked 16 cantaloupe!

These were some big cantaloupe!

Some of them were a little over 10 pounds!

We ate lots of yummy melon.

We picked the majority of our almost 50 cantaloupe within about 2 weeks.  One morning I cut up a 10 pound cantaloupe and since I could not get the lid on the container, I told the kids they could eat some.  In less than two hours, they ate the entire thing!  It was fun to let them eat as much as they wanted.  One Saturday, Dan and I canned 12 quarts of pickled cantaloupe.  It is great to eat in the winter.

I had some of your cantaloupe (some you gave away at the SITM meeting) and it was absolutely the best cantaloupe I have ever had! What kind of seeds did you use? We might want to grow some next year.

I'm glad you liked it! The larger basketball size ones are called Superstar and the slightly smaller, smoother ones are called Athena. We got the seeds either through Henry Fields or Gurneys. We thought they were some of our best cantaloupe too. I'm not sure which kind I had in that container at the SITM meeting, but both were really good. We just ate our last cantaloupe yesterday. :(
