Do you know how the FOCA would affect doctors who have NFP-only practices? Would they be forced to prescribe contraception or stop practicing medicine? This really bothers me because most other doctors are not very knowledgeable or supportive of NFP and I really don't want to be forced to see a doctor who's going to try to pressure me into using birth control or getting sterilized everytime I have a baby.

Of course, I don't like the FOCA because of the increased access to abortion, either...but if one of its effects is to get rid of NFP-only doctors, well, that affects me directly. :( And it seems kind of ironic that a bill called the "Freedom of Choice Act" could actually limit my choice of doctor in the area a obstetrics and gynecology!

Grrrr....hoping and praying that John McCain wins tomorrow!

Dawnie,

I'm guessing that it would be the same thing that's going on with gay "marriage" issues. Photographers, wedding venues, cake bakeries are all being sued by homosexuals whose business is being turned down. Sure, they could go to another business that would be happy to take their money. But, why do that when litigation is so much more fun?

It would probably be the same with doctors. Sure, anyone who wants an abortion can find one rather easily. However, it would happen that doctors who do not want to perform murder on the unborn would be forced to give up practice, if disallowed to conscienciously object.

Just my guess as to how this will all unravel.

Oh, it's absolutely ironic that the Freedom of CHOICE Act takes away the freedom of choice for many Americans. The hatred that the culture of death has for the culture of life is almost overwhelming.

Sorry if I'm overly bitter today. This whole election season has me stressed out!!!!

Dawnie and Catholic Wife & Mother,

Boy, that would sure get me steamed if FOCA passed and that took away all those conscience clauses.

Of course, most doctors could not be forced to perform abortions because because they could say they have no training to do them, but you can bet your bottom dollar that all medical students and pertinent residents would be forced to learn the procedure.

Oh, the lawsuits that would happen. I heard of a doctor who got sued for refusing fertility services to a lesbian couple.

Now, contraception would be more difficult, but what I would do if I were still practicing and FOCA was in effect is this: Gather all studies showing the harmful side effects of contraception (ie, strokes, blood clots, link to breast cancer, etc.) and then present it as I don't prescribe these because they are potentially harmful to the patient. I'm sure I would probably get sued, but I would have to resist.

I could totally see Planned Parenthood or their puppets sending people to target NFP only doctors and lawsuiting them out of business. Yet another twist on persecution of the Christians. It's going to take a lot of guts to be a true Catholic doctor (and pharmacist, etc,) if this all takes place.

And remember, if Obama does get elected, that 1)there must be some reason for it, and 2)God can make good come out of it (how, I don't know).

Oh I'm so depressed! I can't believe Obama actually won! :(

But, as I told my daughters today, he may have won the battle, but the war isn't over yet! Maybe this will be a wake-up call to faithful Catholics to pray more for our leaders and our nation.

I really hope and pray the FOCA doesn't pass.

And Janet,

I was thinking the same thing you are about using medical reasons to refuse to prescribe contraception. There is a lot of evidence out there that shows it is harmful to women.

A friend of mine told me that when she was on the Pill in the 1980's for cycle problems, her doctor told her that he wanted her to get off of it as soon as possible b/c of the risk of stroke, heart attack, etc...and that he would NEVER prescribe it to anyone over the age of 25 or anyone who smokes. It is sad that the risks are dismissed so lightly today. I don't know if my friend's doctor was typical of all doctors in the 80's, but most doctors today seem pretty unconcerned about the lethal and serious side effects of the Pill and other kinds of hormonal contraception.

Thanks for reminding us to keep trusting in God...He did allow Obama to get elected, so there must be some good in it. Maybe he and Biden will have a conversion? :)

Hmmm, maybe Tiller will convert too. lol Seriously, though, when I remember, I do try to pray for the Dems in power(and Tiller, too), that God will save their souls, esp. the ones who call themselves Catholic and still support abortion.

And don't forget, we have already won the war, thanks to the real Messiah. Maybe the next 4 years will get everyone clinging closer to God.

As far as side effects of the pill, I saw an article recently that mentioned some obscure risk for breast cancer that had one tiny study done as if it were fact, and yet no mention of the well studied link between the pill and breast CA and abortion and breast CA.

Oh, the pro-aborts will be calling Obama for paybacks. Hope the GOP can stand firm on something.
